For Hilarie Burton, actress, author, host, business owner, farmer, and mother of two, life is an exciting balancing act. "I feel lucky that I have a career that allows me to travel, and then I get to come home to my family and life on the farm," she says. “But it's also a lot of work," she adds. To manage it all while feeling her best, there are a few key practices and habits Hilarie swears by.
Hilarie has never been a fan of subscribing to beauty expectations for women, and now at 39, she appreciates a more natural, low-maintenance look more than ever. "I let my skin wrinkle and am not afraid to let my hair go gray," she says. "I see these as accumulations of life experiences, and they're treasures. As we age, it's important we celebrate it—it's a gift."
During the pandemic, Hilarie gained a new perspective on self-care. "So much was already put on women—helping kids through virtual school, taking care of our homes, and managing our careers virtually. Then we had to become our own beauty technicians—it was overwhelming." Hilarie appreciates that she can now place part of her beauty routine back in the hands of experts.
To give herself more time to enjoy her favorite things—watching movies with her family, tending to her garden and cooking—Hilarie maintains monthly leg waxing appointments at European Wax Center.
"Because I don't have to spend time shaving my legs every day, I have more time to read with my kids or take business calls," she says. "A low-maintenance routine is the best form of self-care for me. I love that I don't have to think about whether or not my legs are hairy, or if I have ingrown hairs or razor burn."
Hilarie makes juggling her life in the spotlight and quiet family life at home with her two kids look easy, but she dispels that notion. "I've always believed that if you're willing to put in the work, you can have the best of both worlds, but one thing is for sure: It's going to be messy," she says. "How do I do it all? Honestly, I don't, but I try. And I know I will fail at some things, but that's okay. You can't win unless you swing, right?"
At the end of a long day—whether she's been acting on set or working on the farm—Hilarie sits down for dinner with her family and then relaxes with a hot shower. Afterward, she has a nightly relaxation ritual of applying a rich lotion from head to toe. "I'm a big lotion person," she says. Hilarie's favorite is EWC Shea Body Butter. "It feels amazing and is a tiny way of spoiling myself every day."
