Nia DaCosta is helming the Captain Marvel sequel starring Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, and Iman Vellani.

Captain Marvel will be flying back into theaters with a sequel next year. While Brie Larson will reprise her role as Carol Danvers, she won't be the only superpowered woman on-screen; she'll team up with two new characters—notably, both women of color—Ms. Marvel and Monica Rambeau. The director, Nia DaCosta, will also make history as the first Black woman to helm a Marvel film.

Here, we've gathered what to know about Captain Marvel 2, officially titled The Marvels.

It will be released on July 28, 2023.

We're still about a year away from the next installment of Captain Marvel, sadly. The sequel was originally scheduled for July 8, 2022, and was later pushed back to November 11, which is now the debut date for Black Panther 2. Marvel boss Kevin Feige has finally confirmed that The Marvels will arrive next summer, pending any more delays.

Nia DaCosta will direct, becoming the first Black woman to helm a Marvel flick.

DaCosta's big gig was first reported in August 2020, but she and Disney made the news official with a wide announcement on December 10. The filmmaker behind Little Woods and the Jordan Peele–produced Candyman follows in the footsteps of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who directed 2019's Captain Marvel.

DaCosta is the fourth woman to direct a Marvel feature—following Boden, Black Widow's Kate Shortland, and Eternals' Chloe Zhao—and the first Black woman to take on the job. Ryan Coogler became the first Black director of a Marvel film with 2018's Black Panther.

Ms. Marvel will be in the film.

Danvers will be joined by Kamala Khan, the most recent iteration of Ms. Marvel in the comics. A Pakistani-American and Muslim teenager based in Jersey City, Khan will make her first on-screen introduction with a Ms. Marvel TV show on Disney+ in 2021. Up-and-comer Iman Vellani plays the young hero in both the forthcoming series and The Marvels.

Teyonah Parris will star as Monica Rambeau.

Monica is the daughter of Danvers's best friend, Maria Rambeau (played by Lashana Lynch), who appeared in the first Captain Marvel movie. In the '90s-set film, Monica was just a little girl (then played by Akira Akbar), but in the forthcoming sequel, she'll be an adult played by Teyonah Parris (Chi-Raq, Dear White People).

Monica has superpowers too. According to Entertainment Weekly, she was first introduced in the comics in the '80s and was the first Black woman to join the Avengers. Her powers, which she acquired from exposure to an energy blast, include flying, traveling at the speed of light, and transforming into pure energy, per EW. Monica has assumed many aliases throughout her history in the comics, including Captain Marvel (she actually took on the role before Carol Danvers), Photon, and more.

Parris entered the MCU in the Disney+ series WandaVision in early 2021. We meet her as an agent of S.W.O.R.D., the intelligence agency founded by her mother that focuses on sentient weapons, which brings her to the trouble Wanda Maximoff is making in the small town of Westview. While entering Wanda's hex, her DNA gets rewritten, resulting in her superhuman powers.

Zawe Ashton and Park Seo-joon will play unconfirmed roles.

As we get a year closer to The Marvels' premiere, the film has rounded out its cast. Velvet Buzzsaw and Mr. Malcom's List actor Zawe Ashton joined the production earlier this year, and is reportedly playing the main villain. (She may be joining her fiancé Tom Hiddleston in the MCU villains roster.)

Korean actor Park Seo-joon has also joined the film in an unspecified role. Park's best known for starring in the k-dramas What's Wrong with Secretary Kim and Itaewon Class, as well as the Oscar winner Parasite.
